WAWONA KITCHEN

SAN FRANCISCO, CA

STUDIO 18

The objectives were to open, activate and reconfigure the existing congested kitchen.  The first move was to separate the laundry room, which was accessible from another location.  This enabled us to increase storage and surface area.  The owners, who cooked most of their meals and liked to entertain, wanted to activate their formal dining space, which was achieved by reconfiguring the entrance and swapping out the uncomfortable banquettes for a warm table.  We opened the wall separating the kitchen and living room to create an alternative raised-bar style dining area.  With the space now extending into the living room and increasing the fenestration on the opposite wall, the kitchen is larger and less constrained.   In addition to these strategic moves, all the materials, fixtures and appliances were upgraded, respecting the owners’ style and budget.
