ROOFS:
TOPOGRAPHY, SPACE, LIMIT

LIMA, PERU

STUDIO 18

The one-week workshop sponsored by Centro Cultural España, the Spanish Embassy in Peru and SALA 1042, explored the potential of transforming static rooftops into active public space. Conceived as an artificial topography, the rooftop surface has conditions that allow social, cultural and economic interaction. A city block in downtown Lima was used as a case study for a group of architects, anthropologists, designers and artists to analyze its spatial and programmatic components. They deduced with quantifiable data that the rooftops could permit potential interventions that would enable future designers and planners to transform the city. Property owners, artists and community planners are currently developing spaces in a new arena that has traditionally been unoccupied.
